Leanne Bock (aka Le Riquiqui) is a visual artist working across drawing, assemblage, video and installation. Her practice applies everyday objects and makeshift materials to explore overlapping realities — personal and collective, rational and intuitive, conscious and subconscious — where the banal slips into the poetic and logic transmutes into the dreamlike.

Leanne Bock is a visual artist exhibiting and undertaking residencies locally and internationally. Her background in design and illustration since 2002 refined her eye for visual language, communication systems, and the construction of meaning. Her practice spans drawing, writing, sculptural assemblage, video and installation.

Investigating the formation of ‘realities’ – personal and collective experience, conscious and unconscious processes, and constructed and natural systems – she collaborates with the living environment, everyday objects and materials to create ephemeral visual languages that invite reflection on how meaning, memory and perception are assembled.

Bock learns from holistic and ancestral philosophies, Jungian psychology, embodied cognition, cultural criticism and connection with the natural world to access new windows of perception, informed by daily writing in Spanish and reflective/reflexive rituals. Through a process of research, observation, dialogue, pattern recognition and play, the familiar becomes strange, and the banal takes on new dimensions.

Born in Theodore, Queensland, Bock has lived and worked throughout Australia, the UK, France and Latin America, maintaining fluent Spanish as part of her everyday life and art-making. She is currently based in Naarm/Melbourne, holds a Master of Contemporary Art from the Victorian College of the Arts (2021), and works from her home studio in Pascoe Vale.

<description>La Sombra y Las Aguas Subterráneas (The Shadow and Subterranean Waters) is a personal project of writing, dream analysis, ritual and visual art, an exploration that lived with me and within me for over a year. It was a tactile channel, facilitating a period of major transformation and discovery by exploring symbols of the subconscious, diving into deep psychology, biological interconnection, integrating death, loss and accessing vulnerable corners of the psyche by stream-of-consciousness making of childlike cutouts.
I much prefer these cutouts spread on a workspace under natural light than up on a wall, cut off from the context of reality. Like they’re not meant to be elevated; they’re supposed to stay humble, ephemeral, and ‘in progress’ like the paper-thin moments of daily life piling up, floating in and out and sometimes cutting, when we least expect it

This series has been a process of shifting shadow and light, diving into the symbols of the subconscious and exposing the flimsy facade of material reality.

During my residency at La Casa Móvil (Algodonales, Andalusia, Spain), I explored the idea of body-as-house, house-as-body, delving into the relationships between realities—both constructed and organic/objective—internal and external, of the living world that I inhabit and that inhabits me.

As a traveller, I sought out portable, lightweight, and everyday materials in local stationery stores and posed abstract questions to open a dialogue with my bodyhouse and the housebody of the wider environment.

I carried out the project through embodied and expanded methodologies, resulting in a fluid process through writing and playful drawings (shown in detail below), and a video documenting the traces left by the environment on my bodyhouse.

I spent hours in the mountains following goat trails, opening my senses and absorbing the calls of the cicadas, the whispering trees, the fragrence of straw and wild thyme, the textures of the jurassic rocks, the colors and sensations of the dry, scorching natural environment, while bathing in the river, drinking from the sweet mountain springs, and paying attention to the animals and plants around me. I played with realities and constructed systems as a language—exchanging the definitions of body and home and experimenting with interconnections between organic systems.

It was a unique and experimental experience of self-reflection, flow, and bodily connection that — thanks to having a week of time, space, and a disconnection from daily responsibilities — allowed me to clearly identify ecocultural patterns and traces, follow an inner path, interconnect a network of fragments with strokes and threads, transpose layers of realities, and channel conceptual ideas, both internal and external. The project continues and evolves my work as a rich source of development.

“In my artistic practice, I work with everyday materials and objects to explore relationships between individual and broader, collective realities. Through embodied and expanded methodologies, I experiment with ideas and pose abstract questions to examine constructed realities, deepening my connection with and understanding of myself and the world around me.&#38;nbsp; Here (in Algodonales), by writing and drawing, I investigate the theme ‘bodyhouse / housebody’, from a personal, bodily point of view in relation to the living world. As a traveller, I make use of ordinary, lightweight and portable materials – a notebook, pen and pencil (purchased from the local shop), that’s it!”

“My intention during the residency is to open a dialogue with myself, my body, with the natural world here and with the other artists in the Casa Móvil. I want to play with constructed reality and language, and explore the relationship between my bodyhouse and that of the living world that I inhabit. The residency attracted me for its inherent themes – care (the idea of practising art as a form of self-care and reflection), body and nature. For me, body and nature are almost the same thing, as the concept of bodyhouse that I explore, the body is ‘nature’, intrinsically part of a living system – the body houses a system of living organs and nature houses a system of living bodies. Zooming out, the universe is a bodyhouse, a system housing infinite, interconnected bodies.”

“In a world with layers of colonisation and war to gain territory and resources, it’s possible to ask – where are my roots? Where do I belong? ... As I age, my veins are starting to bulge, almost popping up and out of my body, as if they want to make contact with something external, like the roots of an old tree do, popping up and out of the earth. But the objective realities are that I’m not a tree, my bodyhouse is mobile, the earth doesn’t belong to anybody, to anything, we belong inside the housebody of the earth. And little by little, I will become less mobile, as my body returns slowly to her, the earth.”

“On my first day in Algodonales, a few days before starting the residency, I went to find a laundry to wash my clothes. In Google Maps, there was a ‘public laundry’... so I happily went off to investigate it, with my bag of dirty clothes and powdered detergent. But what I found wasn’t a room full of coin-operated washing machines and dryers. Nope, it was a historic shelter with rectangular stone depressions in the floor, full of fresh water from the mountain spring. Nextdoor was the Fuente de Algarrobo (the spring of the Carob tree), accompanied by its namesake tree, with arms outstretched, providing shade. I crouched down and tasted a little pristine, sweet, cold water pouring from one of the outlets. It seemed miraculous on that hot afternoon – a rich gift below the dry earth, bleached by the sun. I thought of the writing of Gloria Anzaldúa and swallowed some of that pure water with the intention to clarify my connection with the subterranean world of the subconscious, and my heart.”

“We live in a fragmented world, constructed from layers of imaginary realities, made by human beings, forming systems –social, political, economic – which value false hierarchies, separating concepts that can’t exist on their own, that belong to an objectively real network: ie – The mind is part of the body, it funcions, depends on and belongs to a network of the entire body. Humans are organisms that are part of the living world, and we belong to it; we depend completely on the earth and its waterways, not the reverse. Aren’t economic systems supposed to serve and support humans, not the other way around? Bodyhouses are inhabitable and interconnected biological organisms. Networks of human perception fragment and malfunction when natural channels and threads are interrupted, separated and broken. I ask myself how I can start to reconnect with the sustainable fonts (springs) of reality, rejoin the threads of perception and reimagine alternative constructed realities?”

“I refer to objects as resting places for life because they stabilise human life. The same chair and the same table, in their sameness, lend the fickle human life some stability and continuity. We can linger with objects. With information, however, we cannot.”

Collapsible RealitiesA work in progress by a work in progressLeanne Bock

Working with everyday objects, I explore personal and collective realities through playful allegories. ‘Le Lendemain’ has been an experimental process of re-creating through recreation, disengaging from virtual realities to engage with the tangible.

Everyday objects are familiar, democratic, immediately recognisable, concrete, utilitarian, yet generally overlooked, and ideal conduits through which to investigate existential realities, to build colloquial visual languages and pose abstract questions.

Collapsible everyday objects, in this sense, are next level! They exude existential confidence with their rock-solid purpose, stable identity and freedom to move. Not only functional, attractive, lightweight, portable, easy-breezy, neat and tidy, they’re socially adept at flowing effortlessly in and out of reality: being there when needed and almost invisible when they’re not, graciously vanishing. Amused, then immediately disturbed, I realise I can relate, and have aspired to fit that description, that of an inanimate object, and reflect on broader systemic forces and social programming influencing the folding-away those who don’t fit the factory default.

Here though, the objects are observed in their active, engaged state: proudly taking up space, triumphantly assembled, chests up, chins high, ready to serve the purpose they were born for (but as we all know, with the potential to dramatically collapse, or worse, reverse into some kind of untameable shitshow).

The process involves working with my hands through simple cut-and-paste child’s play, without measuring or perfecting, making assemblages using basic materials and parameters. This tactile hand-eye coordination focuses intention and attention, engages embodied instinct and activates subconscious processing. As I interpret relationships between vantage point and perception, colour and form, object and reality, more abstract parallels and projections inevitably emerge. Slowly piecing together in a makeshift way.

I try to get thoroughly phenomenologically acquainted with these objects, making portraits from different perspectives. (But in the end, they’re really just geometric portraits of myself. No matter where I move geographically, I can’t escape my skin or the conditions of my gaze).

This straightforward exercise, repeated quietly for two weeks results in a simplistic collective of lightweight perspectives and clumsy mistranslations, puppeting reality, underpinned by interconnected thoughts and invisible questions…

How collapsible are our realities and identities today?

Is the collective ability to grasp contrasting viewpoints expanding, disconnecting, folding away or collapsing?

What are the consequences of continuously consuming disposable information and disembodied perspectives?

How would you describe your identity without referring to an active doing state?

What are your existential anchor points?

Paso 1: bien comunicada
(Step 1: well connected / communicated)

Referencing concrete poetry and the Situationists’ Dérive as a jumping-off point, the video and installation work Street Lyrics explores abstract notions of the street and language, the familiar and the unfamiliar.

It’s a playful, personal response to the unique urban environment of Buenos Aires.

The street is often a habitual mechanism, a well-trodden linear route from ‘A’ to ‘B’ (like stubborn cerebral pathways). A logical, alphabetic system of succession, traversed automatically and repetitively in everyday life. Yet the street, like language, is also an abstract, chaotic, magical space of random exchange, offering infinite possibilities. Traveling to somewhere unfamiliar is a way to de-rail our day-to-day repetitions of both street and language, reminding us that both the street and language are active worlds, living entities, in constant states of change and evolution.

As we go from A to B in daily life, pathways of experience connect us and surrounding matter. We leave invisible woven jet streams over time and space, building up rich tapestries of memory in the ecology of the street and in our bodily memories. Las veredas (the pavement and footpaths), also record traces over time, storing memories fastidiously as cracks, scuffs, residue, and discolouration. They slowly wear down and decay, destined to eventually be updated or replaced. Like language, the street is alive with relational meaning, loaded with signs, symbols, history and politics.

Paso 2: la calle me habla
(Step 2: the street talks to me)

The work emerged by exploring the city of Buenos Aires on foot, absorbing, observing and thinking as I went. Walking over 70km in the first week of the residency, I set destinations in unfamiliar areas to carry out everyday, mundane tasks, taking routes which piqued my interest in the moment. The walks and conceptual parameters were influenced by the midtwentieth century practices of the Situationist International movement (the dérive and psychogeography).

From the first day, I was drawn to discarded metal shapes on the street, unwanted machine offcuts. Aesthetically scattered on the pavement like poetry, claves, clues.
Worthless treasures waiting to be interpreted. Quietly asking to be reassembled, scrambled, scrabbled... Como la calle me habla! Taking a playful approach (and having realised with delight that the metal offcuts are ubiquitous and familiar to Porteños / locals of Buenos Aires), I developed videos by building an extemporaneous poem out of 11 metal shapes, from which I could form 12 makeshift letters.

I used mainly English and borrowed from the other languages insistently chattering in my head: Spanish, local Rioplantense, which I’d heard on the street, and French. The abstract assemblage of words follows an irregular yet rhythmic flow and a slow, pedestrian pace. The distinctive veredas of Buenos Aires provide the centre stage for this dialogue with the calle.

Paso 3 (Step 3): calle-to-action

The posters echo the material forms in the videos while calling upon the vernacular of street publicity. The photos of the veredas were taken while walking, some accidentally, some impulsively and without a particular intention. Pasted as an indoor installation and out on the street, the posters may appear to advertise something by following the logic of sharing details of a service. But there is no commercial purpose, no contact details, no call-to-action or social media handle. They repeat the abstract poem lines from the videos with the same metal letterforms, offering tabs to be torn off and kept. Somewhat opaque, they evade accepted systems and expectations. They propose possibilities of confusion, annoyance, pointlessness, mistranslation and misunderstanding (a passer-by was overheard saying they were about the council repairing the footpaths). Yet also of imagination, open interpretation, connections and random exchange, not conforming to the linear A to B logic of language and the calle.

A familiar public language with unfamiliar intentions. A playfully open proposition which carries no expectation of return. Sólo letras ensambladas con la música de la calle (Just lyrics / letters assembled to the music of the street).

Patience and Solitude (1) proposes a personal and collective sense of losing control and grip on reality, a conflation of mounting personal anxieties and global crises, confined to the top of a coffee table.
Ordinary objects are markers of identity and storage devices of memories, that make up the democratic and familiar visual language of the everyday, articulating the realities we’ve constructed, anchoring the narrative to a particular time and place.

Pandemic lockdowns have provided a magnified study of the absurdity of everyday life in general.

Confined to domestic spaces, we feverishly repeat habitual routines, express frustration, longing, love, hope and embrace unusual makeshift coping mechanisms.

Mundane repetition and a semblance of order continue, as globally, shit unravels in epic proportions at an alarming rate, within a universe dancing to unknown laws of physics.

Contemporary philosopher Thomas Nagel believes absurdity itself resides in the human ability to step back, appreciate the absurdity of existence, and then carry on with the repeated banalities of everyday life, regardless.

A micro to macro conflation of seriousness and humour, purpose and meaninglessness, order and chaos.

Patience and Solitude playfully touches on themes of repetition and pattern, existentialism, excesses of mass consumption, perception, fragility and constant states of change.

It enacts the elusive complexity of the everyday, by inviting connections and valuing ambiguity and indeterminacy as ends in their own right.

Combining the slow, tactile practice of handbuilding ceramics with projected memory of place (my own videos from home and places I have travelled to and felt a strange connection to), Hand-Held contemplates the intangible sensory accumulation we absorb and store, forming connection to place through embodied cellular memory, the interdependence and interconnection of living systems, and the knowing unconscious. These connections are fragmented, misplaced or completely disconnected by the grind of everyday life, social conditioning and consumer culture (which superficially immitates and puppets real connection), resulting in dreamlike, suspended realities – like politics resembling a bizarre staged theatre production, or social conventions morphing into absurd performativity contents – shifting the focus away from what is needed to ground and nurture a living being.

	Long
2020
3min colour video, sound.

Made at home in Coburg, Melbourne, August 2020, during stage 4 restrictions (the second lockdown, during winter).A montage of short videos, capturing photos of
faraway destinations projected onto mundane domestic surfaces at my
home in Coburg.
The photos are my own, taken in 14 different countries over the last 16 years. The transluscent
and magic realistic qualities of light projection (as well as linguistic connotations of ´projeciton´ as a transfer of emotion and desire) implies a layering of lived experiences, and echos the changing
nature of memory and the ghostly intangibility of suspended past moments, conflating long distances, long times, and longing.
The bland
white noise of the projector ambiguates for unidentifiable suburban sounds – hairdryer? traffic? range hood? heater? vacuum cleaner? leaf blower? All of the above, blending into one mundane soundtrack of domestic stillness.
