5km NSWE
2020
30min colour video, silent.
Responding to the philosophies of psychogeography, and the geographic restrictions and dreary domestic routine during stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne, 2020, I took myself out on a walking project adventure, to the (5km) edges of limitation.
On separate days, I walked exactly 5km North (panel 1), 5km South (panel 2), 5km West (panel 3) and 5km East (panel 4) from my house in Coburg, with my phone strung around my neck as you do, capturing the journey in timelapse mode.
I ended up at a shopping strip in Fawkner; a cemetery in Carlton; a house for sale in Essedon; and a traffic island in Preston.
It was kind of like a holiday.
This playful and experimental project, born as much out of a need to move and be free as much as creative exloration, employed conceptual and geographic limitations and was the first ‘step’ towards integrating walking as a fundamental part of my roaming art practice.
